IN TIMES OF CORONAVIRUS
Reading: 3 minutes
In these times of coronavirus the importance of continuously washing your hands is even more relevant than ever because of the disruptive Covid-19, and a good hand hygiene has proven to be the best way to prevent falling ill.
Why is hand hygiene so important?
The structure of the coronavirus consists basically of three elements: the genetic material (RNA), proteins (responsible for it penetrating and infecting the cells), and the viral cover that surrounds and protects the virus. This membrane is made of lipids that, as well as being very sensitive to changes of humidity and temperature, have a great enemy: soap.
Soaps and the rest of tensoactive agents dissolve fat, leaving the coronavirus without its viral cover and thus unprotected
Washing your hands prevents spreading germs, including the coronavirus. So when you wash your hands you protect yourself against germs and stop spreading onto other people.
In the words of Dr Patricia Ricarte, Technical Advisor Director:
“It is essential to maximise hand hygiene and cleanliness. We must wash them with soap and water, but not just in any way. Washing has to be comprehensive and for at least 40 seconds, and scrubbing all the surfaces of the hands: palms, backs, between the fingers, etc. Another option is to apply water-alcohol gel with at least 70% alcohol. We must hydrate and protect suitably the skin of our hands, which will be altered by frequent washing and the use of water-alcohol gels.

The continuous washing of hands and application of water-alcohol gels produces dryness and roughness that can turn into the appearance of irritation, darkspots, and cracks.
Solution? Maintain a constant hydration.
